[Flower Cultivation Must See] Horticultural Knowledge (6)-Introduction to Fertilizer
1. What is fertilizer
1) Fertilizer refers to a natural or artificially processed auxiliary medium composed of one or more essential nutrient elements for plants.
2) A class of substances used to improve soil properties and increase soil fertility levels, known as "plant food.
2, Why Fertilize
1) The potted medium often used for family flower cultivation does not contain nutrients. Fertilization is needed to supplement the deficiencies in the medium to meet the needs of nutrients in the growth and development of flowers.
2) Nutrient elements necessary for higher plants include carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, boron, manganese, copper, zinc, molybdenum and chlorine.
3) The lack of any element will affect the normal growth and development of crops. For example, nitrogen deficiency will lead to short and weak plants, and abnormal green leaves such as yellow green and yellow orange.
3. Classification of Fertilizers
Commonly used fertilizers for potted flowers are usually divided into two categories: organic fertilizer and inorganic fertilizer.
1) organic fertilizer: through the organic processing, fermentation, decomposition of carbon-containing materials that can provide nutrients for plants. Materials include human feces and urine, feather horns and bone meal of livestock, waste of fish, meat and eggs, cake fertilizer, hemp sauce residue, green manure, etc.
2) Inorganic fertilizer: fertilizer composed of inorganic substances, commonly known as chemical fertilizer. It mainly includes ammonium phosphate fertilizer, large-element water-soluble fertilizer, medium-element fertilizer, trace-element fertilizer
4, and advantages of fertilizer
1) It can supplement one or more essential nutrient elements of plants lacking in potted medium, and promote plant growth and development, luxuriant branches and leaves, flowering and fruiting.
2) organic fertilizer is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and trace elements, fertilizer release slow and lasting. It is beneficial to improve the properties and structure of the medium, promote the formation of the medium aggregate structure, improve the fertility level of the medium, and increase the ability of water retention, heat preservation, ventilation and fertilizer retention.
3) Inorganic fertilizer has high nutrient content, fast fertilizer efficiency, easy to be directly absorbed and utilized by crops, and convenient application, storage and transportation.
5, Disadvantages of Fertilizer
1) Organic fertilizer must be fully fermented and decomposed before use, and raw fertilizer is easy to damage flower roots. Nutrient elements are difficult to be directly absorbed and utilized by crops, and must be decomposed by chemical and physical effects in the medium and microbial fermentation, so that nutrients are gradually released.
2) inorganic fertilizer does not contain organic matter, in chemical synthesis mechanical processing, need to consume a lot of energy, pollution of the environment, and long-term application of inorganic fertilizer is not conducive to the improvement of medium fertility.
6, How to Use Fertilizer
1) Liquid Fertilizer: Add water according to the proportion specified in the fertilizer instruction (generally about 1:500, thin fertilizer should be applied frequently), spray it on the leaves, and then irrigate the roots until the medium is fully wet (pay attention to the degree of dryness and wetness before fertilization). The fertilization period is about 7-14 days depending on the plant.
2) Granular slow-release fertilizer: sprinkle it on the medium according to the capacity of the flowerpot or mix it in proportion when replacing the pots with soil. Below 2L is about 1-2 grams, 2-4L is about 4-8 grams, 4-12L is about 8-20 grams, and the fertilization cycle is about four months.
3) When using, organic fertilizer and inorganic fertilizer can be selected to improve fertilizer efficiency intensity and durability. Such as planting can use vegetables or fruits, it is recommended to use pure organic fertilizer to ensure safety and health.
